CAVE or Lascaux Lascaux in southwestern France Grottoes contain some of the oldest and best prehistoric art in the world. Cave paintings mostly depict this animal has about 17 000 years of age. This cave is one of the many popular tourist destinations, but unfortunately since closed in 1963, you can no longer see the original cave. For conservation reasons, starting in 1983, the public can only visit the replica at Lascaux II.
Lascaux II was about 200 yards from the original cave. This cave contains two replicas of a cave room that is the Great Hall of the Bulls and the Painted Gallery. To view a replica of the other room, you can visit the prehistoric art center in Le Thot, France. In the original Lascaux caves, there are actually several rooms such as the Great Hall of the Bulls, the Lateral Passage, the Shaft of the Dead Man, the Chamber of Engravings, Painted Gallery, and the Chamber of felines.
Original paintings in the Lascaux cave consists of nearly 2000 images that can be categorized into three large pictures of animals, people and abstract images. Most of the main picture is painted using mineral dyes, while other images directly inscribed in stone in the cave.
The most famous part of this cave is the Great Hall, the Bulls, where buffalo, deer, and animals that resemble horse drawn. Among the 36 pictures of animals that are represented here, the image of four black bull’s tail is the most dominant figure. One of the bison image has 5.2 meters long. It is the largest image found in the cave. In addition, drawing the bull as if it also seemed to be moving.
If interested in coming to this cave when traveling to France, you can come at any time since the Cave of Lascaux II is open daily all year except January. Open time vary in a certain month but generally open from 9:00 to 18:00 o’clock local time.
